(Fastelavn)’

파스텔라운은 단식재 전날밤(the night before the fast)이라는 독일어 ‘vaste lavent’에서 유래했다.
술통에서 고양이 쫓아내기(slå katten af tønden·beat the cat out of the barrel)는 여전히 중요한 전통이다.

Fastelavn is my name bread is what I want, if I don’t get them then I will make trouble.

Money up, money down, money in my can, if I don’t get any money I will be back at Easter.

Danish “Halloween” – Fastelavn

Unlike Halloween the Danish fastelavn isn’t all about scary monsters and egging peoples’ houses. Nowadays it’s about being who you are on the inside not the outside. However it hasn´t always been like this. Can one tradition turn into another and still be the same?
Fastelavn this year is on February 26th and 27th. Just like many other holidays in Denmark, it’s connected to the religion and Easter. To understand how it’s connected we can look at the name. It’s from German “vaste lavent” which means ‘the night before the fast’. This fast lasts for 40 days however it’s not common to do this anymore.
Its origin is from the 1800 and it used to be an adult party where they would drink alcohol, eat meat, dance, dress up and “slå katten af tønden” while on a horse. Which is very difficult I might add. All of the rituals are coming from different countries and are combined into one tradition.
Slå katten af tønden – knock off the cat from the barrel is one of the traditions that is still very important. They would catch a cat and put it into a barrel and take turns to hit the barrel with a bat. THIS IS NOT SOMETHING WE DO ANYMORE! The cat used to be the symbol of evil and the devil. Of course as soon as the bottom fell out of the barrel the cat was allowed to run free. So by beating the barrel you would beat the evil and be safe for the next year. However it wasn´t enough to get drunk, riding a horse and beat a barrel. The grownups would also be dressed up as a bear, the devil or anything that’s considered evil to scare the evil away.
Different sizes of barrels and the crowns for the king and queen. The barrel is decorated with cats and paint in different colors.

There’s one tradition that’s on its way out however when I was younger this was a symbol for me that Easter is coming soon. And that the gymnastic season would be almost over. It’s called Fastelavnsris and no it has nothing to do with rice. Fastelavnsris is a big branch that we decorate with masks, candy, cats and barrels made out of cardboard. In the old days people that worked on farms would use it to spank each other to get the evilness out of each other.
Fastalavn now:
This tradition has changed a lot over the years. It’s no longer a party for the adults but a celebration for the children. Instead of alcohol and a lot of meat there’s a lot of candy and raisins. Dressing up as something evil is not so important but rather dressing up as something cute or someone you admire. The year in which the movie Frozen came out were all the girls dressed up as Elsa or Anna. Boys usually dress up as one of their favorite super heroes or cowboys. If your parents are creative then it’s only your imagination that sets the limits. I remember that one year I was dressed up as grass/marsh with a lot of flowers on it. It was a costume my mom made for me. Come to think about it was a sign of the environment I grew up in. Grass fields are all around our house. In the same year one of my classmates was dressed up as a cell phone. It was not easy for her to move around.
Theres a lot of different costumes for dressing up. however the most common among girls is different kinds of princesses.

From an early age its important for most boys to dress up macho.

Fastelavn is celebrated in the daycare, kindergarten, schools and also somewhere in different areas. The celebration is different depending on where you are. In the kindergartens and schools you – slår katten af tønden – before lunch. You might have a class or two first if you are in school. As a toddler it’s a bit hard especially if you are up against children in schools. Therefore there’s more than one barrel so that children can be divided into age even in the schools. Now for all children especially boys the goal is to be crowned king or queen. The queen is the one that knocks out the bottom of the barrel and the king is the one that knock down the last board.
During these two days of fastelavn some kids go out dressed up and walk from door to door just like during the Halloween. The only difference is that instead of asking for candy they ask for a few bucks and maybe a special fastelavns bread. Now it isn´t nice to ask for money so they sing a song instead. There are two different songs to sing.
The most common one is:

Fastelavn is my name bread is what I want, if I don’t get them then I will make trouble.

The other one goes:

money up, money down, money in my can, if I don’t get any money I will be back at Easter.

So after slå katten af tønden, eating the candy and bread and asking for money, all we need to do is relax and have fun with our friends. This happens on Sunday and Monday every year. So in a way even though a lot has changed the principle of the tradition remains still the same. We don’t beat each other or scare cats but we use our strength to beat a barrel to get the evilness out of our hearts. My teachers would always say to us that we should think about somebody or something that would make us angry just before we had to hit the barrel. That way we would use all of our strength no matter how young we were.

Most people will buy their bread from the baker instead of making it them self. These are just 4 different kinds that has whiped cream, whiped cream with raspberry, creme and jam. If you go to your local baker ask them what kind of flavor's they offer.
