Most of the national days are based on our religion. The Danes are supposed to be Christians even though there’re not so many people believing it anymore. However, this national day is based on our religion going all the way back to the year of 1686. This day is the only one that has been made into a national day by law. This day does not have a specific date however it’s the 4th Friday after Easter.
In the old days, the Danes was warned by the biggest bell in the church. This was a sign that every shop had to close down and it was no longer allowed to do any sells. That way the church was sure that everybody would be on time and sober for church the next day. Not only were people not allowed to work, play and so on they were also demanded not to eat before the last evening service would be over.

So what was so special about the big praying day? Back in the old days, it was a day where people were praying for peace. Now it’s a day where people can go to church if they want to. It’s also a day where the family gets together and eat hveder which is a special bread we only this one day a year. Hveder is a new version of the old dry bread used to eat on this day because they were not allowed to cook either.

When I think about this day I remember the days were I used to go to my grandmother’s house. She would bake them herself instead of buying them. There would be so much food and people would talk and be happy. The adults would have a shot or two of snaps. For me, they would just a little bit crazy and silly.
Some people just pass this day without knowing why they don’t have to go to work. But for me, it’s a day where the family comes together and have peace around the table and just focus on each other. I do miss those days sometimes but now it’s time to find a new family(friends) to have these days with.
