1년 중 가장 즐거운 때가 돌아왔다. 크리스마스가 온다. 눈과 순록을 탄 산타클로스의 계절이다. 쇼핑과 미칠 듯 바쁜 스케쥴로 사람들이 미쳐가는 시기이기도 하다. 하지만 덴마크에서 크리스마스는 더 많은 의미를 지닌다. 한국에서 크리스마스를 생각하면 안 된다. 덴마크 크리스마스에 비할 바가 아니다. 덴마크에서는 크리스마스를 어떻게 기념하는지 좀 더 알아보자.
덴마크인이 크리스마스를 어떻게 기념하는지 이해하려면 먼저 크리스마스가 어떻게 시작했는지를 돌이켜봐야 한다. 원래 크리스마스는 서로 다른 파티 두 개로 시작됐다. 첫 번째 파티는 12월25일이었다. 이 날은 무적의 태양신(Sol Invictus)을 찬양하는 날이었다. 두 번째 파티는 1월이었다. 덴마크인은 이 날 ‘크리스마스’를 기념하곤 했다. 지금은 동지(midwinter party)날로 더 유명하다.
두 기념일은 모두 기독교 교회가 북유럽에 들어오기 전부터 있었다. 기독교가 북유럽에 전파된 뒤로 무적의 태양신을 기리는 12월25일과 동지날과 기독교인의 축일인 크리스마스가 모두 같은 날로 뭉쳐져 예수 그리스도의 생일을 축하하는 지금의 크리스마스로 탈바꿈했다.
북유럽에서 크리스마스의 역사는 예수가 태어나고 900년 뒤에 시작됐다. 노르웨이 첫 번째 기독교도 왕이었던 선량왕 호콘(Håkon den gode)이 백성에게 크리스마스를 기독교 방식으로 기념하라고 명령했다. 이후로 북유럽에 기독교식 크리스마스가 전파됐다.
그런데 노르웨이에서 시작된 크리스마스가 어떻게 덴마크까지 왔는지 의아한 사람도 있을 성 싶다. 알려주겠다. 사실 먼 옛날 노르웨이, 스웨덴, 덴마크는 한 나라였다. 진짜 스칸디나비아(Scandinavia)라는 나라말이다. 그래서 스칸디나비아 3국 언어가 비슷한 것이다. 전통도 마찬가지다. 하지만 시간이 지나며 모든 것이 달라졌다.

그런데 덴마크인이 크리스마스 또는 12월을 기념하는 방식이 뭐 그리 특별하다는 걸까. 첫 번째로 덴마크인은 12월25일이 되기 전 네 일요일 기념한다는 점부터 설명하자. 우리는 성탄절 전 12월 일요일을 각각 첫 번째, 두 번째, 세 번째, 네 번째 대림절(advent)라고 부른다. 강림일이라는 단어는 예수가 도착했다는 말이다. 다른 말로는 예수 그리스도가 도착하길 손꼽아 기다리는 카운트다운이라고도 한다. 교회에 안 가는 대다수 덴마크인은 이 사실을 모른다. 대다수 사람이 보통 일요일처럼 집에 머물며 가족 친지와 시간을 보내는 동안 몇몇 사람만 일요일을 교회에서 보낼 뿐이다.
이런 와중에도 모든 덴마크인에게 특별한 것이 있다. 대림절 리스(advents kransen, 영문 advent wreath)다. 매 일요일마다 우리는 몇 번째 대림절인지를 확인하고 그 숫자만큼 촛불을 켠다. 아이들한테 대림절은 집안의 요정(Nisse, 니스)한테 선물을 받는 날이다. 물론 요정은 부모다. 가족에 따라 조부모 집안의 ‘요정’한테 선물을 받기도 한다.
첫 대림절과 12월1일 즈음에 덴마크인은 집을 온갖 크리스마스 소품으로 치장하기 시작한다. 어디서나 눈에 띄는 게 바로 요정이다. 사람마다 부르는 이름은 제각각이다. 산타의 작은 도우미, 고블린, 요정(pixie) 등등.

덴마크인에게 요정은 무척 중요한 존재다. 옛날 덴마크인은 요정이 농장이나 다락방 또는 좁고 어두워 발길이 뜸한 장소에 산다고 믿었다. 집의 수호신 같은 존재였다. 요정은 내킬 때 동물을 돌보고 집에 사는 가족이 안전하도록 지킨다. 여기서 “네가 대접받고 싶은 대로 남을 대접하라(treat others like you want to be treated)”라는 격언이 나왔다. 만일 당신이 요정을 잘 보살피지 않았다면 요정은 당신이 집을 떠날 때까지 무서운 일을 조장할 거다. 최악의 경우에는 요정이 붉은 수탉이 울게 놔둔다(let the red rooster call). 집을 불태운다는 얘기다.
다행히도 요정을 즐겁게 만들기는 어렵지 않다. 요정이 원하는 것은 리센그뢰(risengrød) 한 그릇뿐이다. 리센그뢰는 버터와 계피를 섞은 덴마크식 죽이다. 요정도 여러 종류다. 이 가운데 조심해야 할 녀석은 드릴레니스(drillenissen), 장난꾸러기 고블린이다. 드릴레니스는 물건을 옮기거나 숨긴다. 설탕을 소금으로 바꿔치기도 한다.

12월1일은 할 일이 많다. 집을 꾸미고 대림절 리스를 만들어야 한다. 또 달력 양초도 꾸며야 한다. 나는 달력 양초를 ‘카운트다운 양초(countdown candle)’이라고 부르길 좋아한다. 덴마크인은 이 양초에 매일 불을 붙이고 양초에 적힌 날짜만큼 태운다. 식탁에 달력 양초를 올려두는 사람이 많다. 가족이 모여 아침이나 저녁을 먹을 때 양초에 불을 붙이기 위해서다. 유치원부터 9학년까지 교실에는 달력 양초를 두는 일이 무척 흔하다.

덴마크에는 크리스마스를 기다리며 손꼽는 소품이 퍽 많다. 대다수는 어린이용이지만 어른이라고 쓰지 말라는 법은 없지. 가족 중에 아이가 있다면 아이는 12월1일부터 24일까지 매일 집 요정한테 선물을 받는다. 거의 다 작은 선물이지만 일요일에는 조금 큰 것을 받는다.
어린이와 어른 모두에게 필요한 것은 크리스마스 달력(julekalender)다. 다른 소품과 마찬가지로 크리스마스 달력도 종류가 많다. 이 중에 평범한 달력은 매일 하나씩 열어야 할 창문이 그려진 크리스마스 그림이다. 달력 종류에 따라 창문 뒤에 숨은 그림이 다르다. 평범한 달력은 각기 다른 크리스마스 소품 그림을 숨긴다. 역시나 크리스마스 달력도 아이들을 위한 것이라 레고 같은 장난감이나 초콜렛을 숨긴 달력도 있다.  어른은 창문을 여는 대신 회색 점을 긁어낸다. 당첨되면 돈을 받는 복권 같은 달력이다. 마지막으로 TV 드라마와 관련된 달력도 있다. 각 창문 뒤에는 각 에피소드가 무슨 내용인지 암시하는 단서가 숨어 있다. 매년 새로운 드라마를 담는다. 역시나 대다수는 아동용 드라마지만, 성인 드라마를 담은 달력도 있다.

어른들은 크리스마스 달력(The Julekalender)이라는 TV 프로그램을 좋아한다. 비록 이 프로그램이 굉장히 오래 됐지만 말이다. 혹시나 유튜브에서 찾아볼까봐 미리 경고해둬야지 싶다. 직접 보면 당황스러울 수 있다. 요정들이 덴마크어와 영어를 같은 문장 안에 섞어가며 쓰기 때문이다. 그래도 덴마크식 유머를 잘 보여준다. 심지어 내 할머니도 이 프로그램을 좋아한다.

몇몇 사람에게 크리스마스는 스트레스 덩어리다. 사랑하는 주변인에게 맞춤 선물을 안겨주려고 뛰어다니기 바쁘다. 어디든 사람이 넘쳐난다. 장소는 달라도 늘 배경에는 같은 크리스마스 캐롤이 흐른다.
미쳐날뛰기 전에 크게 숨 한 번 쉬자. 가족과 크리스마스 마켓에 들르자. 나를 위한 시간을 내자. 그냥 아름다운 조명을 음미하자. 뛰어노는 아이들을 바라보자. 크리스마스 쿠키와 케이크와 글뢰그(gløgg, 크리스마스에 마시는 덴마크 전통술) 냄새에 취해보자. 결국 크리스마스에 가장 중요한 일은 가족 또는 사랑하는 사람과 함께 있는 것이니 말이다.

Christmas in Denmark part 1

It is that time of a year once again. Christmas is coming. It is time for snow and Santa Claus with his reindeers. It’s also the time for shopping and people going crazy over their busy schedule. But in Denmark it is about so much more than that. And when you think about what Christmas in Korea is like you can’t even compare it to Denmark. So let’s go deeper into how we celebrate Christmas in Denmark.
To understand how we celebrate Christmas we need to go back and look at where it started. Originally it all started with two different parties. The first party was on the 25th of December that used to be the celebration day for Sol Invictus – the unbeatable sun god. The second party was in January when we used to celebrate “Christmas” also better known as the midwinter party. All of this was before the Christian church came to Northern Europe. After the arrival of the Christian church the celebration of Sol Invictus, midwinter party and the Christian Christmas were all gathered on the same day and became the celebration of Jesus Christ birth.
The first story about Christmas in Northern Europe’s history is from the year 900 after the birth of Christ. It takes place in Norway where the crown prince Hakon den Gode (Hakan the good) also known as the first Christian king of Norway ordered his people to celebrate Christmas according to the Christian way. So this is where it all started but if you are wondering how it came all the way to Denmark from Norway then I will tell you. A long time ago Norway, Sweden and Denmark were one country aka the real Scandinavia. That’s why you will find our languages similar and some of our traditions as well. However, through times everything changes one way or another.

But what is so special about the way we celebrate Christmas or December in Denmark? Well first of all we start the celebration 4 Sundays before the 25th of December. We call it the 1, 2, 3rd and 4th advent. The word advent means The lords arrival – in other words it’s a countdown for the arrival of the lord Jesus Christ. Most Danish people actually don’t know this unless they go to church on those days. Some people spend the day in church while others choose to stay at home and be together as on a normal Sunday. One thing that is special for everybody is advents kransen – Advent wreath. For each Sunday we light up the number of candles depending on which advent Sunday it is. For the kids this is a day where you get a present from your house “Nisse”(explanation in next part) aka your parents. Sometimes depending on your family there will also be a present from your grandparents’ house “nisse”.
Around the 1st advent and the 1st of December we decorate our house with all kinds of Christmas things. One thing that is everywhere is nisser. Some might call them Santa’s little helpers or goblins or pixie and so on. But for Danish people nisser are very important. In the old days they were believed to be living on our farms, attics or small dark places where you don’t go too often. It’s a kind of house god. They take care of the animals and make sure we are safe when they want to. This is where the expression “treat others like you want to be treated” comes in. If they aren´t treated well they will scare you so you will leave your house or in the worst-case scenario they will let the red rooster call – it means burn down your house. On the good side it’s easy to make them happy. All they need is a bowl of risengrød – Danish rice porridge with a piece of butter and some cinnamon. There’s a lot of different kinds of nisser but the one you have to watch out for is drillenissen – the teasing goblin. They will move around on your things, hide some your stuff, replace the sugar with salt and so on.

When the 1st of December comes we have decorated the house and made an advent wreath but also made a decoration for our calendar candle or as I like to call it “the countdown candle”. We light this candle every day and burn the number on the light matching the date of the day. Most people keep this light on their dinner table so that they can light it when the family is gathered for breakfast or dinner. It’s also very common that they have one candle in each class at the schools from kindergarten class – 9 grade.

You will find a lot of different kinds of countdown things in Denmark. Even though most of it is for children, it doesn´t mean you can’t do it just because you are a grown-up person. Among families with children, the children will get a present each day (from the 1st until the 24th of December) from the house nisse. It’s mostly a small present and then on the Sundays it’s a bit bigger. A thing that’s for everybody children and grown-ups is something we call julekalender – Christmas calendar. Just like everything else we have a lot of different kinds of Christmas calendars. The “plain” one is a some sort of Christmas picture with a lot of “windows” where you have to open one each day. Behind the windows you will find different surprises depending on what kind of calendar you have. The “plain” one will be hidding different drawings of christmas stuff. As I said this is mostly for the childeren therefore we have calendars that is hidding toys (mostly is lego) or once that are hidding chocolate. For the adults we have calendars where instead of opening a gate you scrabe of a grey spot and collect symbols so that you can win money. The last kind of calendar I will tell you about is the on thats connected to a television “drama”. Behind each window there will be a picture to give you a clue to what todays episode is gonna be about. Every year is a new “drama” and its mostly for kids but some years there will be one or two for adults as well.
This year’s julekalender on the television is:

– Ramasjang – Nissebanden i Grønland (5 pm)

Doing the afternoon there will be some of the older julekalender on the television. Like the classic Pyrus (you will be able to see some on YouTube). Pyrus and Nissebanden are both two calendars that are very important to the Danish Christmas culture and history. It never gets too old and everybody knows who they are. Old and young. For the adults christmas calendars The julekalender is really famous even though its also old. I will warn you if you try and youtube The julekalender you might get confused cause when nisserne is coming they are mixing danish and english in the same sentence. But this show also shows the danish humor very well. Even my grandmother loves it.

For some people, Christmas is a time full of stress. Running around to get the right present for their loved ones. There are people everywhere and the same Christmas songs playing in the background. But before you go crazy of all the pressure take a deep breath. Take your family out for a Christmas market. Take your time and just enjoy the lights, the children running around and playing, the smell of Christmas cookies/cakes and gløgg (explanation coming later). Christmas is about family, love and being with the persons that mean the most to you.
