(Alle sjæles dag·All souls day)은 덴마크인이 조상과 다른 ‘보통’ 사람들을 기리는 날이다.
(Alle helgens dag·All Saints day)은 덴마크인이 모든 성인의 명성을 기억하고 기리는 날이다.

National holidays during the year in Denmark

Just like any other cultures/countries you will find that Denmark has a lot of national holidays. Some is a celebration, some in the back of our mind and some is forgotten. Today I will take you down the road of what we celebrate, what is in the back of our minds and what has become forgotten.
Nothing last forever and we don’t live forever. The same goes for national holidays. As time comes and goes national days becomes forgotten and new ones arrive. During my “short” life I have seen some come and go. I wonder why that is. Are we too busy to care? Is there something more important in our life now? What happened to us, that made us change so much?
Of course not every national holiday is celebrated the same way. Some are celebrated with family, some with memories and a visit to the deaths rest place, some with dressing up and let’s not forget the ones that are celebrated with a visit to the queen’s palace (yes, it’s a national holiday). Down below this you will see that I divided the year in 2. Every national holiday I have been able to find is in there.

  • Those in fat – Is today’s celebration
  • Those in blue – The church is still celebrating
  • Those in fat and blue – Is celebrated by the church and the people
  • Everything else is just a “normal” national day

The first one I want to tell you about is Hellige tre konger – Holy 3 Kings. Remember these men from the bible? Well, this is/was a national holiday in honor of them and the ending of Christmas. Most people doesn´t remember this day. Why? – it’s hard to say. My guess would be, that since it’s in the beginning of January (5th and 6th) some are still tired and just getting used to be back at work or in school. Also, it’s not a day where we do anything special. The family is gathered and go to church or stay home, light up the “3 candles”. While the candles are burning, people would read out loud the old stories about the 3 holly men from the east. It used to be a bit more fun in the old days. To be sure that Christmas is really over, they took a feather from a goose and filled it with powder and melted it in with the candle. So when the candle came all the way to the bottom it would make a loud BANG and you would know that Christmas is over and perhaps go change your underwear. Also, you need to throw out your Christmas tree by now.As you can see there’s a lot and if I have to explain every single one, this article will never be done. So I picked out some of them that I thought were different. Out of the 56 national days, you see here, only around 6 of them has something to do with the war.
Not all of our national holidays are based on the bible or the war. Some are based on superstition. One of them is Blæsemisse. On this day you need to put some hay, or straw on the stairs of the house. If the next day it has left with the wind, it means that the spring in around the corner and if it’s still there it means that spring is coming late. Some people still do this but, most Danish people doesn´t know about this day. Including myself before I made this research. Some get confused because of kyndelmisse. However, blæsemisse is the day after kyndelmisse.
I chose the next one because of the name, Askeonsdag – Ash Wednesday. You might think it has something to do with fire but no, this day is the beginning of our fast. 40 days without the things we care about the most. The 40 days before Easter and Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. I think if the Danish people were still doing this, there would be a bigger understanding between the Danish people and other religions.
Another day that is based on superstition is Valborgsaften – Valborg’s evening. This day is originally German and even though we don’t celebrate it anymore, they do in Sweden. This is mainly done in the evening, where you have to light up big fires on the top of hills so that mysterious powers can’t harm you. Some people even use the day to prepare for the next day, where we pray for summers fertility with a lot of colors and flowers. I remember that day from when I was younger. So much dancing, happy faces and colors.

In June you will find our constitution day and also our flag day, which is two different days. So from an old national holiday to a new one that you will find at the end of June and beginning of July is folkefest – folk party. This is a political party. For some reason, this is a national “holiday” even though it’s not open for everyone. They say it’s a place that’s open for discussions and everyone that’s a part of a political organization. For me personally, when I read about this all I see, are politicians using our money to party again, say they will discuss things but let’s face it – they’re just going to get drunk. Last but not least they call it a folk party but its limited and you have to be a member of a political organization. Nothing good ever comes from parties like this.
From August until October we celebrate the harvest and of course end it with one big party, these days it’s mainly only farmers that do it.
Now after all of the partying, we need to remember those we have in our heart and are no longer among us. There are two days during the year. Both are in the beginning of November. Yes, that right just after Halloween. Alle sjæles dag – all souls day is the day were we are supposed to remember our ancestors or other “normal” people. I don’t know how many people actually does it but, for me and my family, we choose when we remember them. Depending on whom they are, however, it’s common that it’s on their day of birth or death, if not both. Alle helgens dag – All Saints day is the day, where we are supposed to remember all the saints and honor their memories. This day is very famous among the people that go to church. Other people might just suggest that it has something to do with Halloween.

I have one last I want to share with you, it’s in December and has pretty much nothing to do with Christmas. Growing up I thought everybody knew and celebrated Lucia, turns out I was wrong and that it’s just another one of our traditions here in Scandinavia even though we celebrate it differently. There are two reasons why we celebrate Lucia. Number one, she is a Christian saint that was tortured and killed for her beliefs/faith. But that’s not it, no, we celebrate because she is a role model to us. Her name means light in Latin, which to us means that we need to wear light to enter heaven. So we dress up in white sheets, as if it was a dress and carry a candle in our hands. The front Lucia also has light/candles in her hair. Like this, we parade around in the school, kindergarten or city while we sing a song about Lucia.
The other reason we celebrate was to rebel against WWII. It was a reminder that there will always be a light in the darkness.
