Everything old gets turned into the new one way or another

As I’m trying to enjoy my final week in Hong Kong before moving back to Denmark, I find myself taking a stroll down the promenade and look out to the sea. The water is dark and full of the garbage yet I keep trying to find what is underneath. As we all know the sea is full of mysteries.
You might already have guessed today’s topic but before I start I want to make something clear
since this is a sensitive topic. This article is my point of view and if you don’t agree then that’s fine.
Everybody has a right to an opinion. There will be other peoples point of view in this article as well. I’m writing this article because my friend asked me too. He said that if anybody has a right to an opinion on today’s topic it’s me because I’m Danish and born ginger.
Have you guessed today’s topic yet? It’s the little mermaid and her skin color.
However, before I let you know what I think let´s decide which story we are talking about. As the discussion has been going on one thing I have noticed is that people mix two different stories together. Confused? Well, a lot of people place their arguments on Walt Disney’s version claiming that it’s what H. C. Andersen actually wrote. Yes, I have read the story and yes I have watched the movie and solely for this article, I reread the story. It is two different stories. If you don’t believe me keep on reading if you do believe you can skip this next part.
When you read Mr. Andersen’s story you will find that the only thing he mentions about her hair is that its big, long and her grandmother puts white lilies in her hair on her birthday though she wished they were red. Her arms and legs are white. Her face is clear and pure like a rose petal. She loves the color red like the sun when it shines through the ocean which is the same color as her flowers in her garden. Her grandmother clips on seashells on her tail when she turns 15 which is also the first time she goes up to the surfaces which are also the first time she meets the prince. Walt Disney has named her Ariel, not Mr. Andersen. They gave her red hair, gave her a fish as her best friend, made her trade things with a seagull that can definitely not sing. She has had a crush on the prince for god knows how long.
These are just some of the things based on the same character. If you keep looking you will find more details that have not just gotten a twist but has changed completely. The biggest and most important however is the fate of the little mermaid. H. C. Andersen lets her die and turn into the foam after a short period of happiness instead of 285 years in the sea with her family knowing she killed the love of her life. Now Walt Disney was not so poetic and gave her a happy ending instead. Some people say that it’s wrong to choose a black person as the little mermaid. They say that it ruins the story. Some even say that it’s fine that she is black just don’t use the same story or title. To them, I ask which story? The original or Walt Disney’s twist?
As I discussed it with another teacher she told me that little mermaid could be from Atlantis and we don’t know what they look like down there. She could also have a skin condition that made her arms and legs white. The truth is we don’t know where in the world the story takes place and what even better we don’t know when it takes place. Mr. Andersen does not start the story with it was the year 1837. No, this is a timeless story. Don’t even think about saying it’s from a time where there were princesses and princes. Even if it was going on in Denmark we still have a queen and princes and princesses. Just like other countries and I know from a fact that they still from time to time travel by boat.
So when it comes down to it I find that this whole thing is based on peoples abilities to accept changes. Not that I’m saying that they are incapable. Personally, I’m a sucker for old movies and books. I was not happy when they decided to make a newer version of some of the classics. I do however understand. The film business is under so much pressure while making movies that fit this generation and still trying to keep our history alive. You can’t do that without changes. I understand that for some people it’s weird and makes no sense. Just like if you had a blond Scandinavian playing Mulan. That’s just wrong in so many ways mainly because of the time period of the story. but remember that the little mermaid is timeless so it can change and fit into anytime and anywhere. Time changes history, women can vote now, intersexual race and same-sex marriage is not frowned upon (at least not in DK), female and people of color can become the president / prime minister. Yet we pipe for magic and fantastic creatures in our life. So why criticizes a magical creature for being black in a time where we encourage people of color to get the lead roles.
If you haven’t guessed it yet then yes I’m happy that a person of color got the role. Not because of any of the reasons I have listed above but simply because when you look at the Danish population you will find that the Danish people all have different backgrounds and different colors. To put it in magical terms: there is no “pure blood”. Therefore everyone should have a fair chance.
There’s a famous quote I want to use and only change a bit to make it fit this article. – Don’t judge a book on its cover but its content. In this case, don’t judge an actress on her appearance but on her acting which is what I’m going to do. Good luck to Halle Bailey and show us what you got.
