덴마크 축구, 잔디 구장에서 남녀노소 누구나 즐긴다

한국 사람이 야구와 농구를 좋아하듯 덴마크 사람은 축구와 핸드볼을 즐긴다. TV에서 보기도 좋아하지만 친구와 직접 경기를 뛰기도 한다.
덴마크인은 덴마크 축구팀을 무척 자랑스럽게 여긴다. 덴마크는 작은 나라지만 덴마크인은 자부심이 강하다. 덴마크에는 스포츠바(sports bars)가 많다. 큰 경기가 열릴 때마다 스포츠바에 모여 함께 경기를 즐긴다. 단골 손님은 아예 지정석이 있는 경우도 있다. 친구랑 같이 혹은 혼자서라도 축구 보며 맥주 한 잔 걸치기를 자주 즐긴 까닭이다.

축구가 덴마크에서 인기가 높은 덕분에 축구장에 깔 잔디를 키우고 벗겨내 파는 회사도 크는 추세다. 광활한 잔디밭을 보고 있노라면 마냥 뛰어놀고 싶어질 거다. 이렇게 기른 잔디는 축구장 말고 개인 정원에 깔기도 한다. 92년 여름(Sommeren 92)이라는 영화를 상영할 때 잔디를 깔아두기도 했다.
92년 여름은 스웨덴에서 열린 1992년 유로피언챔피언십에서 덴마크 축구팀이 기적적으로 우승한 실화를 담은 영화다. 당시 덴마크는 본선이 열리기 일주일 전에 출전 소식을 들었다. 유고슬라비아에서 내전이 벌어져 유고슬라비아 축구 대표팀이 출전할 상황이 아니었기 때문이다. 거의 모든 선수가 이미 지중해나 남미로 휴가를 떠났던 차에 갑작스레 소집됐다. 누구도 덴마크가 선전하리라 기대하지 않았지만, 준결승에서는 네덜란드를 결승에서는 1990년 월드컵에서 우승한 독일을 이기고 우승을 차지했다.
축구는 덴마크인에게 단순한 운동경기 이상이다. 어릴 때는 밖에 나가 다양한 활동을 즐겨야 한다. 축구는 인기 있는 야회 활동이다. 덴마크에는 너댓살 아이부터 노인까지 모인 다양한 축구팀이 있다. 아이들은 친구들과 즐겁게 뛰놀며 배운 기술을 연습한다. 아이일 때 축구장은 유치원 밖에서 다른 아이를 만나 놀기 좋은 곳이다. 10대가 되면 축구장은 집이나 학교에서 얻은 스트레스를 날려버리고 친구들과 뛰어노는 곳이 된다.

주말에는 가족과 친구가 모여 경기에 나선 친구를 응원한다. 무슨 이유에서든 가족이 네 경기에 참가하지 못한다면, 친구 가족이라도 꼭 한 명은 여러분을 응원하러 나타난다.
나이 들었다고 사랑하는 일을 그만두지는 않는다. 몇몇 사람은 오랜 친구들과 만나거나 축구팀에 들어가 연습하고 종종 또는 주말마다 경기에 나선다. 대다수는 남자다. 무슨 이유에서인지 남자가 여자보다 축구를 좋아한다. 그래서 공원을 걷다보면 종종 어린 아들에게 축구를 가르치는 아버지가 눈에 띈다. 어떨 때는 할아버지가 가르치기도 한다. 그러니 소풍 갈 때는 축구공을 꼭 챙겨라. 덴마크의 오래된 전통이다.

Just like Korea that loves baseball and basket the Danish people’s biggest love is soccer and handball. We love to watch it on the television but also to play it together with our friends.
One of the things that the Danish people are very proud of is their soccer teams. We might not be a big a country but we are a proud people. There’s a lot of sports bars in Denmark where you will find people going to watch some of the big games or people who have their own chair in the bar because they go there very often just to have a beer and watch soccer alone or with friends.
Soccer is so big in Denmark that there are companies that grow, peel and sell the grass for places like soccer fields. When you are standing and looking at these fields you can get the feeling of just wanting to run into the field and play. The grass is also being used for other things like people’s own garden and even for the movie premiere on the soccer movie “Sommeren 92” – summer of 92. This gave people the feeling that they were on a soccer field.

But soccer is more than just a game to the Danish people. When we are kids it’s important that we get out and do some different activities. Soccer is one of the most popular activities we have. We have teams from the age of 3/4 years old to seniors. As a kid, it’s fun to run around outside playing with your friends and practicing what you have learned. As a kid, it’s a good place to meet other kids outside of the kindergarten and get play dates with. Ones you are in the teens it’s a good place to be with your friends and get rid of the stress from home or school.On the weekends the family and friends will come to the games to cheer you on. And if for some reason your family can’t be there one of your friends’ family will definitely be there and cheer on both of you.

Now we don’t let our age stop us from doing something we love. Some people mostly men still meets up with old friends or join a team where they practice and play games once in awhile or on a weekly basis. For some reasons, men are bigger fans of soccer than women are. Therefore it is also very common that you can walk into a park and see a father practicing with his little son. Sometimes it’s even the grandfather. And now who would go on a picnic without a soccer ball? As it has been a Danish tradition ever since.
